Happy Chinese New Year
Happy Chinese New Year, Rooted Alchemy community. As we transition into the Year of the Fire Horse, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the Year of the Wood Snake we’re leaving behind. I was born in the Year of the Snake—specifically a Fire Snake—so the fact that Rooted Alchemy began during a Wood Snake year is not lost on me. It feels meaningful that this community started during a time associated with growth, coiling potential, and quiet development beneath the surface. Now we step into the energy of the Fire Horse — expression, freedom, vitality, and forward movement. In Five-Element theory, Wood generates Fire. Wood grows, gathers strength, and then becomes fuel. Fire illuminates, warms, and transforms. In that sense, this transition feels very natural — what we rooted and cultivated now has the chance to ignite and express itself. If we look at the Snake and the Horse themselves, there’s an interesting common thread. Both animals move from their center. Both are deeply connected to their core and capable of fluid, adaptive mobility within their environment. In Tai Chi terms, they embody connection to the central axis — the Tai Chi line — and the ability to integrate smoothly with what surrounds them. This is exactly what we cultivate in practice: stability without rigidity, freedom without chaos, movement that is both rooted and alive. Wood energy puts down roots. It draws nourishment from the ground and establishes structure. Our community has been doing just that — quietly taking shape, building foundations, and growing stronger together. Fire energy brings warmth, visibility, and momentum. As we move into the Year of the Fire Horse, may that fire energize our practice in a sustainable way — not a flash that burns out, but a steady flame we can carry throughout the year. I’m genuinely excited to see where the Rooted Alchemy Tai Chi and Qigong community goes during this dynamic and auspicious cycle. Happy New Year, everyone. Gong Xi Fa Cai.

Happy Chinese New Year to everyone here and especially to those born in the year of the Horse! Sonny talks about the Five Elements which are important in Chinese traditional medicine: metal; water; wood; fire; earth. They relate to the lungs, the kidneys, the liver, the heart & the stomach or spleen, respectively. They also have colour: white, blue, green, red & yellow, respectively. Five elements, Working within; Connected to everything. 🙇‍♂️
So far (day 3) so good
A few appointments this week have interrupted my practice, however I've just completed Day 3 and I'm feeling good and looking forward to Day 4. My knees and calves are being stretched, also I can feel my shoulders complaining....a little! Doing Qigong just feels right, I'm sure I'm sleeping better at night because of my practice. Also, I attended the online live classes for Qigong AND Tai Chi. I got a bit lost in places with Tai Chi, but I want to do more so I'll join the live classes again. It's also good to see others of the community there too. Ashley🙇‍♂️ (Just call me Ashley, I see I wrote it twice in my profile; is there a song with that in the title?)

I've just finished Day 5. I had a break between days 4 & 5. This may happen, as my wife recovers from major heart surgery, she has many appointments & so our usual daily routines are changed. Having "signed up" for this first month means I have the ability to approach the online course at my pace. In today's practice I found the Golden Rooster a challenge especially with balance, specifically on my right leg. I assume this is due to lower back difficulties about 5 years ago (during Covid) which have not been addressed fully since recovery. Thankfully, Sonny suggested a partial lifting of the foot which helped.

@Alan Hook Thanks Alan. I have a couple of worn discs which I have managed with daily exercise but one leg always misbehaves! Yes! Rooted! Keeping the whole foot on the ground! 👍

@Kirby Mannon Hi Sonny, I'm impressed by this site. I'm taking the 7 day challenge but have appointments so the 7 days may not flow. However, I have decided already that I want to continue beyond the 7 days; can you send me a link to signing up for the year. Thanks, Ashley.

I've just finished DAY 1...it's good to be practicing Qigong again. Very relaxing. Looking forward to Day 2. Also, as I'm a "slow-mo" I'm taking a few notes as I wish to take this further, although I'm not sure where, yet! Good night everyone! 😉
