Roughly 9 months ago I found mold in my pantry. I tore open the wall and saw a thriving river dripping inside. The house was built 13 years ago. The professionals who built it decided to install an HVAC supply duct in that interior wall and didn't insulate it nor did they protect it from inadvertent damage. The sub that installed the pantry shelves drove nails straight into that wall to support them. The wall had been leaking for 13 years.
I called a few hvac companies and nobody would touch it. One told me they would gladly replace all of the ductwork in my house though 🫠
I set out to rebuild the pantry myself. I had no tools and no experience. Now I have a table saw, a miter saw, a router, etc. I've learned a lot from people like Rich and others on youtube "university."
The supply duct took up the entire stud cavity so the first thing I did was to shim out the studs to enlarge the cavity (from 3.5 -> 5"). I then sealed the holes in the supply duct and used bubble wrap insulation around it.
I decided to create a custom pantry with floating shelves, built-in cabinets, drawers, lighting, the works. Boy did I sign up for quite the journey. I'm adding a picture of what the original pantry looked like and a video of the finished project.
