The first thing I made that I was proud of.
Back in Jr high, 9th grade, I made hanging lamp for my mom for Mother's Day. It was made from mahogany and had 8 sides. Four of them were this gold opaque pieces of plastic. It looked really nice and is hanging in my living room 51 years later.

@Rich Murphy It looks white but it's actually that old plastic yellow translucent panel from the 70's. Excuse the mess Holidays!
Fare Thee Well:
Folks, it is painful to write (both, Physically & Emotionally), that I must leave here for a good while; I "took" a fall, at 75YO that's not good. the short story is My left arm is not cooperating and I can barely do 1/4 of the things that must be done. 75 YO, in my body [except for the Right Hip, it tells Me its 127 years old]. (I can still do humor) • • • • • but truth be told, I get depressed NOT being able to be creative in wood, AND seeing it done brings about some Depression[s] that I have worked on for Decades as a RVN Combat Veteran to get rid of. So I choose to "be absent" for a while • • • • I hope to to be back, but live with GOD'S WILL not my own . . . . a parting joke: "What is ORANGE, and Sounds just like a Parrot?" * * * * * * * * * * * A CARROT philip lives LIFE, on Life's terms

I'm not sure if you will see this but I feel for you. Last May I broke my elbow from a fall and still have not been able to return to the shop. In fact I'm thinking about giving it up. I'm not sure how safe it's going to be without full use of my arm. See I blew up my elbow because I landed on it. It took 4 plates and over a dozen screws to get it back together. Come spring I'll make my final decision.

This might sound stupid however, not falling off the ladder. Over the years my patience has decreased and I keep skipping the last step on the way down the ladder. It's getting ridiculous. Especially since I know better. I'm just in a rush and boom again. Things like putting everything away at the end of the day I've mastered because I have Asperger's syndrome and I have to put everything away or I think I might blow up.

@Rich Murphy I have never seen one. Curious 🤔

It's definitely my metal Swanson speed square. I think I bought it in the 80s, maybe mid 90s. That thing has been dropped from the third floor window. Fell off the bench so many times I can't even count. Used the most for 90 degree cuts on 2x4 and 2x6. Second most use is squaring the table saw blade and Bandsaw blade. And they are not expensive.
🔨 What’s the Tool You’d Recommend to Every Beginner? (Win $100 Gift Card!)

What’s the one tool you think every beginner should have in their shop? Tell us in the comments (and feel free to share why it’s a must-have)! 🏆 Prize: $100 Sawinery Gift Card (perfect for picking up your next favorite tool 😉) 📅 Winner announced on October 27!

Not really what you were asking but every beginner needs a Swanson speed square. They are affordable, useful and almost indestructible. Then I would say a corded 7-1/4 Inch corded circular saw and a drill. If you go corded on the drill make sure it's reversible and variable speed. If you have not decided on a battery platform and want a cordless drill look for sales with the charger and battery.
