Trouble with tangents

Hi all, I am just starting out with the surface modelling basics course. But Im getting super odd results from my tangents. When I start a control point curve it wont let me lock the tangent by pressing T unless I am part way along the curve rather than at the end point (dont know if this is normal behaviour). Then when pressing shift to obtain the destination points tangent, I get a tangent line which is way off. Is it me or is there something wrong with my install? Thanks in advance. i
