My mother and I have an ongoing debate that started a couple of months ago...
Mom: AI is going to dumb down an entire generation. Kids today are going to use AI instead of developing their brains.
Me: I disagree. You need to use your brain to use AI.
Mom: Kids are going to end up with no creativity or critical thinking.
Me: Mom, have you ever used AI?
Mom: No.
Me: Let me show you. I think you'll be surprised by how much AI requires both human creativity AND critical thinking in order to work.
Mom: I don't think so.
I thought it would be impossible to change my mom's opinion (she was a secondary school teacher and while she's 83 now, she still cares about educational standards today)....
... until I watched 's new video yesterday (see title above) about how anyone can create book ideas and outlines in minutes -- and I now have a new argument for how positive AI can be for both creativity AND critical thinking. [The vid is terrific: it's interactive so you can literally follow along with Julie and create your own book outline in the 15 minutes it takes to watch the video.
Anyway, in the video Julie says that "AI is revolutionizing creativity" and that "if you're mediocre, yes, your job is in jeopardy... because AI has made it easy to replace mediocre."
But Julie also says this brilliant line:
"... if you're truly great at your craft AI will make you an industry leader."
Which got me thinking about how rather than dumbing us DOWN, AI really has an opportunity to smart us UP.
In the video Julie talks about how AI lacks humanity, which means to truly use it effectively (so we don't make the mistakes posted about yesterday), we have to CONSCIOUSLY access our humanity and apply it to the material AI creates. And, in eliminating/replacing people who do average work AI creates a culture in which to really succeed a person has to more fully step into reaching his/her potential.
Which means, artificial intelligence may actually end up making us all access MORE of our innate intelligence, not less.
Sunday is Mother's Day (shoutout to all the moms in this group!).
I'm not going to argue with my mom, but it's a daughter's job to help her mom evolve with the 21st century. I've got a new strategy now, one I think will work. 😉 Thanks, Julie!
I'm curious -- in what ways do you find AI up leveling your creativity and intelligence?
