No Confidence Needed (to do Deals)...
This has come up a few times this past week so I thought I'd share some insight...
"I'd feel more confident if I had more experience..."
In my experience, this just a symptom of something far deeper.
Here's the thing...
A person can read about swimming.
They can listen to audios about swimming.
They can watch videos on swimming.
They can interview a swimmer.
And they can even watch an expert swimmer swim.
But eventually they're gonna have to get in the water and try to swim themselves.
Just watching someone else do a deal is a lot like watching someone swim...
Here's my thing...
We're not gonna get any real world experience (aka wisdom) from just watching.
It's just delaying the inevitable.
We gotta jump in and do our first deal.
From my experience there's two reasons this happens.
#1: Not having a big enough reason to step neck deep into doing it.
When I started working with Travis back in the day?
I went head first...
My first few deals did NOT go like I had envisioned them lol.
But I kept going forward.
If I hadn't?
I can tell you it would have only been to protect my fragile ego lol.
Aka...my identity.
#2: Reason? I made it all about ME...
I had to be "THE MAN" that did it all.
If it was going to BE it was up to ME!
Yeah...that got in the way well before I even met Travis.
And frankly, it was a reason why I invested with him back in 2015.
Now, there's two solutions to this dilemma.
SOLUTION #1:
I'd take inventory of what it's costing to remain in this state of flux.
And start taking inventory of what's possible when I make progress.
If my focus is on, "What if this goes wrong..." (and that will harm my identity).
Well, then I'll find 2011 reasons NOT to do it.
If my approach is, "This is what I'm aiming at and I'm gonna see it through because it's important to me..."
Then it's likely we'll make our way through it.
Identifying that underlying reason is a big help.
For me?
I just love everything about the Mojo/Ronin universe.
I love solving problems.
I love writing.
Doing what I do, is more about BEING who I want to BE.
I just can't NOT do deal making.
Here's the thing...
From my experience, true confidence comes from results.
Even supposedly "BAD" results (although I don't like to use that label)...because I learn from them.
And learning can be gauged by behavior change.
If no behavior changes then no learning has actually occurred.
Just accumulation of information.
My first few deals I got egg on my face.
But I learned greatly from them.
I also had a huge reason to keep going that was personal to me.
By not reaching out to peeps to do deals?
That said to me that my reasons for NOT reaching out were far greater than my reasons to WANT reach out.
And it was usually about protecting my identity/ego.
I would make rejection MEAN something about me lol.
SOLUTION #2:
Solution #1 is all well and good but it requires internal CHANGE...
...and if you remember anything about making offers.
Requiring the offer to work based on "internal change" is a "no no" lol...
So here's another solution that doesn't require change.
Even though I think there's value in solution #1.
Last year, was on one of my AMA's and I remember us discussing this.
At the time, Chad wanted to work behind the scenes...
He said he wasn't about being in front of the camera.
So that made Coffee Dates a challenge and therefore getting deals were going to be a challenge.
However, the solution was, "Work with someone who DOES like doing coffee dates and you do the BEAMer work (back end agency marketing)..."
Needless to say Chad was all about it.
Problem solved WITHOUT internal change!
I've learned from Travis that our biggest constraints are a gift.
They force us to look for solutions AROUND the constraint.
Other peoples resources (like time & energy) are OUR resources (that's a Travis saying lol).
So needless today if there's a reason NOT to reach out to do deals?
There''s 2011 ways to turn that constraint into a solution.
Here's to 2025!
In your corner,
~ Tony
