Over the past few weeks I've sent over 300 cold DMs to strangers.
Below are the 3 meanest replies I got.
For context: the 300 doesn't include follow up messages (multiple 300 by 2 or 3) or fellow Ronin (I consider Ronin warm even though I'd never talked to them before).
Before I started DMing I was SUPER anxious about how people would react to my cold pitch.
I imagined an inbox full of "Efff you!", "Kiss my @$$" and untrue comments about my mother.
These fears were blown up further because I was using my personal FB profile.
If I really cheesed someone off it was possible they could DM my wife, family, or friends.
A scary thought for my inner adaptive child.
With these fears in mind I tried to stack the deck in my favor.
1) I reminded myself all these worst case scenarios are just thoughts.
They hadn't actually happened and, while possible, were unlikely.
2) I used Travis' techniques for making the outreach as personal as possible. I’d spend a minute looking at someone’s profile for something to relate to before DMing.
However, some people didn't have much info on their socials - so there were still a lot of people who got a generic (but nice) message.
What was the end result?
How mean were folks to a perfect stranger when they had the chance?
Here are the 3 meanest replies I got from my 300+ cold DMs:
1:
"O ok
That's interesting
No thanks though"
2:
"Perhaps but it depends on what you are trying to sell me ."
And the very meanest thing someone said to me…
3:
"I'd like to drop the conversation. have a great day 🙂"
I could tell you what I’ve learned from this experience, but…
It’d be more fun to hear what you think.
Tell me your thoughts in the comments?
