Know Rules/Break Rules
Of course clothing rules are arbitrary. But in the lineage of Classic Timeless Menswear, there certainly have been a few standards that have gained a lot of traction. Some are more esoteric than others.
1) don’t tuck a sweater into pants (not going to debate this one I can see both sides but it is convention-that’s why there is an elastic band in most sweater bottoms)
2) a sweater is a sweater and a shirt is a shirt.
3)white soles are for boat shoes and sneakers
4) when mixing bold colors try to limit your self to three
Broke all but number 4 with this OOTD today. So what. Rule breaking is the essence of personal style so long as one A) knows the Rules and B) breaks them with intentionality.
I think this works for a go-see-a-buddy/client for a pseudo meeting over a pint on a Friday afternoon.
The red shirt is a heavy gauge knit collared polo that I am wearing as sort of sweater on windy cool day. The biggest adherence to convention was the choice of steel blue trousers to coordinate with the shirt and socks and shoes to limit the colors to three because of all the other stuff going on.
