Dressing sharp gave me a chance to help
I have a really cool encounter to share with you all! Today on my commute home from law school, a young guy started calling out to me from across the subway car. When I looked over, he asked, “What do you do?”
I was wearing a three-piece navy pinstripe suit. Not many law students dress like that for class, but I’ve always believed in showing up sharp. I told him I’m a law student, and he said, “I figured.” Then he asked if I could help him with something.
He showed me a subpoena — he’d been called as a witness in a case and was anxious about what it meant. I sat down with him, helped him understand his rights and responsibilities, and gave him a bit of clarity and reassurance. When I got off at my stop, he thanked me over and over for taking the time.
All of it happened because of how I presented myself. The suit didn’t just make an impression — it opened a door. And that made it worth every bit of effort.
