It worked... until it didn’t.
I was vibe-coding a deployment pipeline for a product I’m working on.
New infrastructure. New environment.
I figured.. why not let AI do the heavy lifting.
At first, it felt great.
Problems identified.
Solutions proposed.
Momentum.
Then the fixes started taking longer.
More attempts.
More retries.
I kept smashing the enter key.
Eventually I hit a point where everything slowed to a crawl, and that’s when it clicked.
The problem wasn’t the tool.
It was me letting speed replace understanding.
AI was confidently doing something.
But it didn’t actually know why.
And because I hadn’t slowed down to build a mental model of the system,
I couldn’t guide it.
I couldn’t correct it.
I couldn’t tell when it drifted..
And boy did it drift!
So instead of saving time, I burned weeks pulling things apart.
That’s the part no one talks about.
AI doesn’t eliminate the need for expertise.
It delays the moment you discover you don’t have it.
Used well, it’s leverage.
Used blindly, it’s a time amplifier.
Copywriting works the same way.
If you understand the fundamentals, AI speeds you up.
If you don’t, it just helps you get lost faster.
The real work hasn’t changed.
You still have to slow down.
Ask why.
Guide the tool.
Build the model in your head.
Mastery first.
Leverage second.
Anything else looks like progress..
right up until it isn’t.
