When I was younger, I wasn’t exactly on the best path. Running with the wrong crowd, doing stupid things, and living without purpose. By the time I hit 20, I was heading nowhere fast. No college, no direction, working a warehouse job making $8.50 an hour, just drifting.
I knew I wanted to help people, but I didn’t know how. I had always taken, but rarely gave back.
One night, laying in bed, I had this moment of clarity. I realized that I hadn’t accomplished anything. Something had to change. I didn’t know what yet, but I knew I couldn’t keep going down the same road.
A few days later, a buddy told me he had joined the Volunteer Fire Department...
It sounded badass! 🚒🔥
So I showed up at the fire station the next week. The minute I walked in, I was hooked. The camaraderie, the laughter, and the purpose—it felt right. I helped them set up a haunted house for the local kids, and just like that, I was in. That night, I became a firefighter.
The more I trained, the more I realized that this was what I’d been missing. Purpose. Meaning. A way to give back.
But it wasn’t all easy. About a month in, I experienced the worst wreck I’ve ever been on—multiple fatalities. That night, I had a moment of doubt. “What have I gotten myself into?” I thought. But I realized if I could get through that, I could get through anything.
That night, I made a decision. I was DONE with the stupid stuff I had been doing. I was DONE with the people who were bringing me down.
I decided to become committed—to becoming a career firefighter, to giving instead of taking, and to living a life of impact. A life that mattered. A life I could be proud of.
That decision changed everything. It set me on a new path. Through hard work, dedication, and commitment, I became the man I was meant to be.
We all have moments where we face a choice. Do we continue down the easy path—the one without purpose, meaning, or direction? Or do we make a decision to change?
The truth is, we all have the power to change our lives with a single decision. But that decision has to be followed by commitment—commitment to do whatever it takes to create the life you want.
If you’re feeling stuck or drifting, ask yourself: What decision can I make today that will put me on the path to where I want to be?
That decision I made back in 2001 set the stage for everything I’ve done since.
I committed to changing my life, and I followed through.
Today, I live a life of fulfillment, purpose, and impact. But it all started with one decision.
Now it’s your turn.
What decision have you been putting off that could change the direction of your life?
