Import mode on Fabric? Yes, it is necessary. My thoughts
1) Import mode is faster than DirectLake, but for big data, sometimes we must use OneLake/ADLS to store the data.
2) For maintaining a single version of the truth, we can leverage the LH/WH to provide data to everyone (Power BI datasets, data scientists, developers, etc.).
3) We can keep certified aggregations in the LH/WH and we can import custom aggregations into specific Power BI datasets.
4) Optionally, you can import some of the centralized aggregations to improve the performance of reports in certain circumstances.
5) Accessing details of large tables could be done using DirectLake/Power Query.
6) You hit the sql server database only once..
