You often hear Michael say "Status is status is status". This got me mulling over status and I think that although we all understand what it's meant by the term, it could be helpful to break it down a bit more.
We can break status into two: outward status and behavioural status. These are distinct yet interconnected dimensions of status.
We can think of outward status as the visible markers of a person's social standing or success. This includes:
- Wealth and Material Possessions: High-income jobs, luxury cars, designer clothing, and other material goods that usually signal financial stability and success. These outward displays often attract attention because they are easily observable.
- Social Influence: Popularity, social media presence, and connections within influential circles can enhance a man's perceived status. Men who are well-known or well-liked may be seen as more attractive due to their social capital.
- Physical Appearance: Attributes such as height, fitness, and grooming can also be considered outward indicators of status. Research suggests that women often associate physical strength with higher status in men, which can influence attraction.
Then, we can think of behavioural status as encompassing the traits and actions that convey a person's social value through their interactions and personality. This includes:
- Confidence and Charisma: A confident demeanour can significantly enhance a man's attractiveness. Confidence is often perceived as a sign of competence and capability, which are attractive traits in potential partners.
- Kindness and Altruism: Behaviors that demonstrate empathy, kindness, and generosity can elevate a man's status in the eyes of women. These traits suggest emotional intelligence and the ability to nurture relationships. It's no coincidence we're so vocal about charity events inside MoA.
- Leadership Qualities: Men who exhibit leadership behaviours such as decisiveness, assertiveness, and the ability to inspire others often command respect and admiration, which enhances their behavioural status.
And here's the rub. While outward status can initially attract attention, it is often behavioural status that sustains interest in long-term relationships. Outward status may draw women in at first; however, long-lasting attraction typically relies on behavioural traits that foster emotional connection.
I find it important to make this distinction because it's a disturbing trend to see a subsection of the manosphere complain that women are only interested in outward status and so unless they are wealthy, famous or good-looking, they stand no chance with women and therefore might as well not even bother trying.
Whilst this conclusion might hold some truth, it's mostly only in the short-term dating context. Long-term dating is a completely different dynamic where the behavioural status markers become far more relevant.
Although I'm making a distinction between the two, it would be a terrible mistake to then think that should only pick and optimise for one or the other. That's the wrong approach.
Maximise both!
This is the exact reason why MoA has modules and trainings not just on how to socialise, network and plan events. But there are also entrepreneurship, financial, fashion, fitness, and most importantly, leadership modules to make you the complete package.
As men, we will always be judged by our socioeconomic status. It's harsh, but those are the rules of the game. You can either learn how to play the game or decide to not participate in the game. I suggest the former, it's a much more fun and fulfilling life.
