Janine Driver- Detecting Deception
Ever wonder if someone was great at telling lies or terrible at keeping secrets?
"Janine Driver is a New York Times best-selling author and award-winning keynote speaker who spent 16 years as a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Driver has trained over 60,000 lawyers, judges, and law enforcement officers on how to detect deception. Known professionally as the “Lyin' Tamer,” she now shares her people-reading skills to help corporate and law enforcement professionals better understand other’s hidden emotions unintentionally expressed through body language."
The 3 main take aways from this video are some key indicators of internal states.
1)Elbows out shock about: When we are shocked about something, be it that we just won the lottery or someone found footage of us committing a crime that we didn't think existed when we tend to put our elbows out to feel secure...
Think your body language if you just won $1m at 711, hands and elbows would be out, you'd be checking your surroundings, but you'd be happy.
If you were being accused of cheating and you didn't do anything you wouldn't be upset, but you were shocked about how you may have been found out your anxiety would be high just like your elbows...
If you asked your girl why she had her male coworker drop her off instead of driving home herself and she throws her elbows out and gets upset thats incongruent with someone that is not worried or shocked. They'd be confused if anything...
2)The higher the hold, the more anxiety we hold: Put your hands at your side and say "who is on the phone" thats just a simple question. Now put your hands on your head and say it... That is the body language of someone who is anxious about who is on the phone.
3) Spot the jerk behind the smirk: When someone is a powerful liar (lies for benefits not to avoid consequences) they tend to smirk as they get off on outsmarting people.
Watch to the end of the video to see her break down an interview of jessie smollet.
