Hustle Harder Hustle Smarter - Summary
I listened to the audio book before finding out about the book list. This review was first for ig a while ago, but I took it down since it didn't add to the high status ig grid still being worked on.
What a great read! Rapper/entrepreneur 50 Cent wrote this book, sharing his tips and techniques for entrepreneurship and business deals, from being a rapper with G-Unit
to the show Power. Along the way, he gives many real life examples to illustrate each point. This has caused me to question whether or not I myself actually have an entrepreneur's mind. Somethings learned from each chapter.
Finding Fearlessness
You can't be afraid to take a calculated risk. Many of the best deals made had risks along with them. Do your research before making a move and go with your instincts.
Heart of a Hustler
To truly hustle you need to customize your life to be able to hustle as hard and efficiently as possible. Even if this means working a little bit on vacation. This is different from hustle culture (if your not working hard every day and night, you don't truly want what you are working for). Hustling is defined as always being willing to work and looking to get the most out of your work for a project.
Constructing Your Crew
You've friends either need to level up with you or they will bring you down. When it comes to business, always maintain discipline in your group.
50 tells a story that, during a G-Unit tour, 2 guys got in a parking lot fight with each other over sports jerseys. 50 made it clear at the start that he won't tolerate in group fighting.
Right after breaking up the fight, 50 put the guy that started it on a bus back home.
Knowing Your Value
You need to know your worth. Yet sometimes you'll need to take a hit financially for the long term. This could mean:
1. Not getting paid as much on a deal as you know you could.
2. Literally taking a loss of money.
In exchange, your "paycheck" could be a bigger audience, access/learning from big names or working with a solid brand. 50 references his internship at Interscope (access to Eminem and Dr Dre and the brand) and his TV series Power (how it got started, barely paid himself to having the hottest show on stars) to stress the point of "the long term".
Evolve or Die
Either adapt to your audience or get left behind. Things changes...at work you may not be doing the same thing in 3-4 years. Maybe you get a promotion or different projects.
This is natural.
Power of Perception
Always be your authentic self (best self). Still, bare in mind, the way you dress and how you carry yourself may not send the message that you want to send to others. You'll want to present yourself differently for a board meeting with big corporate guys on a deal, as opposed to a more casual meeting to discuss upcoming projects.
Always be mindful of what your audience wants and is into.
If We Can't Be Friends
If we can't be friends them become enemies. Not out of hatred, but for competition. At least "enemies" talk about each other and create a buzz about each other. Thats better than your name not getting around at all. Competition fuels improvement and success. 50 goes into a story about how Lamborghini got started and its competition with Ferrari. Many times you need to "create controversy to create cash", Eric Bishcoff's (WCW wrestling) words. No matter how good you are at something, there is always be someone better. "Compete" with that someone to raise your own standards.
Learning from Your Ls
Admitting your mistakes and learning from them will help you improve more than anything else. The most successful people out there have had many loses.
The Entitlement Trap
Things are always worth more when you work for them. No matter how much your willing to help, some people don't want to level up as well.
Never be ashamed of any type of job, A paycheck is better than no paycheck. The more successful you become the more people around you want a piece of that success.
The worst slums in America are like the Hamptons compared to many villages in third world countries.
