This has been discussed before, but not in almost a year.
First, all should know that BJJ is not going to get you in sexy Batman/Superman shape. It's not that kind of exercise, and it's not really great for cardio either. I'd recommend Zone 2 basebuilding on a stairstepper for 6 months for general health, but that is digression at the moment. If you want to know about cardio I recommend Peter Attia and his articles and podcasts on Zone 2 cardio. It's quite fascinating.
But BJJ. This won't get you in shape. But you need to implement this training in your life. It will make you better in so many ways, and the least important way it will help you is in martial prowess, but with 6 months of 2-3 hours/sessions of BJJ a week you'll be able to handle 95% of physical confrontations you'll ever be in.
You can't lie to yourself, and the mats will tell you the truth. You will learn so many lessons, so fast, and you will learn so much about yourself and what you have to overcome to be the man you want to be... but it will give you a track to follow to do so, and by the time you hit blue belt, 1-1.5 years after you start? You'll be a whole different person, and a better man.
Tap early, tap often. Also, it's expensive. YMMV, but I pay 185 a month and I'm in Houston.
Also, I must reiterate, you aren't going to get bodybuilder big doing this. You have to find a way to fit it all in. I do, and you can as well.
Here is Superman workout by Mike Israetel. He does BJJ as well I think he's a brown belt, he has some videos on how to balance it all out.
And don't come in here saying some dumb shit, "Oh yeah BJJ is great, I also recommend Boxing and Muay Thai to become a 'well rounded fighter.'" Now far be it from me to tell you not to train to be a champion fighter, but lets just get our resistance training, cardio, and bjj in first before we start thinking about the UFC.
