In a Restaurant
I should link this with @Constance Tuballes converstion class unit 6! You are in a restaurant, looking at the menu when you see what you would like. Do you say: "I would like this one please" "I would like that one please" Now you are thinking about what you say when you ask for something 🤣, so which one is right? It depends on how you are thinking:- You have the menu and you are pointing to a picture, (the book is in your hand and the picture is in front of you). Naturally you would say "Can i have this one please". You have the menu and you are pointing to a picture, (but this is a picture of the food you want and the food is not in front of you). Naturally you would say "Can i have that one please" But, that doesn't tell you which one is right!😈 The correct way should be since the menu is typically in front of you but not literally on your plate or in your mouth, native speakers default to “that.” Basically because you don't have it and that you are looking at a picture. However, people do say both and no one batters an eyelid or think anything is wrong. (yes, a bit or useless information. But at least you know)
