NFL Dynamic Kickoff is a dud.
Pro kickers have gotten so good at booting a 70+ yard ball that a record setting 73% went for touchbacks in 2023. So they changed the rules to the UFL's stunt of kicking from the 35, but lining up the O-line 25 yards ahead... called the "Dynamic Kickoff". The video attached is good footage and commentary in the preseason as teams tried to figure out what they would do.
But guess what?
It seems pretty clear that coaches have told their kickers to just kick it deep and take the "punishment" of allowing the opposing team to start at their own 30. Touchbacks were down by 6.5 % for Week 1. And, what's more, with this alignment means no surprise onside kicks. It's now the most boring play in football. The NFL helped kill that opportunity 2 years ago by changing where players could be placed and where kickers could kick from.
If they want kick returns, there's an easy fix (like moving the kick off back 5 yards and bringing the players back), but I fear that the NFL is going to make the kickoff extinct.
