Less than 30 days ago we started our cold DM-ing journey to help small gyms, personal trainers, and fitness studios generate immediate revenue. DR was our pitch, a 7-day free trial to earn the prospect's trust.
Cold DMs work, they work well when you send out a lot of them. It's a process and it requires trust in yourself first. I say this because I tend to want to fix things when they don't go my way, or I tend not to have much patience when I should have plenty instead.
Through cold DMs I met some fantastic entrepreneurs who now are clients, I met people who were not ready for DMs and politely declined, and I met people who ignored our messages, meaning they might not be ready.
One day I sent a DM to a traditional martial arts studio, and Chris, the owner, replied to my brutally cold DM this way:
---> I get lots of these. Rarely do I reply. But every once in a while, I do. So. What do you know of martial arts schools? We operate and retain students way differently than a gym. 10 prospects in a week mean wasting a lot of time on people who are probably not going to sign up. Which then takes time away from the people who are actual martial artists already there. I’d be intrigued if you said you’d find me 1 solid martial arts student in a 2-week span. That seems more plausible. Saying 10 to someone who’s been in the industry as long as me is weird cause I know there’s a solid chance that none of those 10 are good martial arts prospects. People looking for a free trial class or something but were never going to dedicate the next decade consistently training and earning a black belt. That’s like 1 in 1,000 students. Anyway that being said I’m always interested in trying new things so tell me how you are obtaining these leads. How are you filtering out leads that aren’t actually looking for traditional martial arts training? Are they just gonna show up without me talking to them or knowing they are coming? I ask cause when I’ve done things like this before that’s what happened. People show up for appointments they made with some company and I don’t have any idea they are coming. And then they take the 1 trial class and I never hear from them. Nearly every solid student I’ve ever had came from the referral of a current student. Any info you can send me here that shows me you're not just throwing numbers at me but actual leads that have an actual interest not just in martial arts but interest in my school would be awesome and would make me want to learn more about your company. <----
My reply to him:
---> Chris, Thank you! Your message is on point, I truly appreciate the attention, the details, and the time you took to craft this masterpiece. As a mother and wife, my motivation for taking martial arts classes was primarily for self-defense, especially in light of the increasing number of assaults and rapes in New York City. Unlike my husband, who is a lifelong martial artist and trains consistently as a lifestyle, I viewed it as a necessity. I realize that my initial cold DM did not fully represent the traditional martial art sector and its nuances. I understand that traditional martial arts studios are different from gyms or self-defense joints that prioritize quantity over quality. I get it. To answer your questions: how you are obtaining these leads? We use a strategic approach database reactivation. This isn’t running some ads and hoping it works. This is working strategically with what is already there. How are you filtering out leads that aren’t actually looking for traditional martial arts training? We filter them out with a proven offer, an offer that cannot be refused. Are they just gonna show up without me talking to them or knowing they are coming? Absolutely not! How messy would that be? An account manager will be assigned to you, like a virtual assistant, and you have continuous access to communications with the prospects, see everything that is going on, receive notifications on your phone when someone takes on the offer, and most importantly these leads will be appointment-only visits. So you know who is coming, and when they are coming… And when you said this: Nearly every solid student I’ve ever had came from the referral of a current student… We can help you with this, done it in the past successfully. With this said… a long message… I know, I have some ideas of how we can bring some quality prospects into your studio. If you’d like we can get on a 15-minute call, I’ll share the nitty-gritty of how it can be done and if you think it could benefit you, then we start, if not, that’s okay. Thank you Daniela <----
Here is the best part: Chris accepting to chat with me.
---> Ok, I can chat for a bit about it. <----
I shared this with you because more than a DM, our job as DR specialist is to make the prospect feels UNDERSTOOD and to solve one of their problems. In this specific order. When I do cold outreach, my mind is in the space of helping an entrepreneur like myself feel understood first, and solve a problem, second.
When you approach cold DMs this way not only it will be a much more pleasant experience, but you'll convert way more DMs into conversations.
With love and a lot of DMs :D
Daniela
