Whether you're a grassroots coach or the next aspiring England manager, at some point you'll need to do the licences to allow progression.......Or do you?
It can become an expensive hobby once you look into it.
I'm very fortunate that my clubs have supported me through my FA and UEFA licences up till now but was the time and money spent really worth the outcome?
Well on one hand no and the other yes!?
By attending the courses you learn the relevant skills and technics to deliver and analyse sessions that are linked to progression and skills development within the boundaries of the principles of play. Then you are assessed on how you deliver and understand that.....Here's your certificate ...... job done.
Obviously its not quite that simple, but often the question is what now?
I know a few outstanding GK and outfield coaches with just the entry level qualifications and they really are wizards of the craft and their knowledge is far superior to mine.
When I've spoke to them they all say two things.
A- experience and practice is paramount
And
B- Always evaluate each sessions, yourself and never stop learning.
I find these two comments sum up any footballing course perfectly!
Now i liked the courses I've been on but my goals may differ from others, but the principle of going forward and bettering yourself as coach by continuous learning and self reflection is the most valuable tool you could ever learn to do.
