๐ŸŒฑ Container Soil & Drainage Mastery Week โ€“ Day 1 of 5
๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‡๐ข๐๐๐ž๐ง ๐‘๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ซ ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ ๐ ๐ฅ๐ž (๐ˆ๐ญโ€™๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ) If a plant struggles in a container, what do most of us blame? The plant. The fertilizer. The light. Our watering. But more often than not? Itโ€™s the soil structure. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐Œ๐ฒ๐ญ๐ก: โ€œ๐†๐จ๐จ๐ ๐’๐จ๐ข๐ฅโ€ ๐Œ๐ž๐š๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ-๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก Weโ€™ve been taught that rich, dark, heavy soil equals healthy plants. In containers, that can actually be the problem. Container plants donโ€™t just need nutrients. They need air pockets. Roots require oxygen to survive. When soil stays dense and wet, roots canโ€™t breathe. And when roots canโ€™t breathe, everything above the soil line starts to decline. ๐ŸŒฑ ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐Œ๐š๐ค๐ž๐ฌ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ซ ๐’๐จ๐ข๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ In-ground soil works differently than potting mix. Garden soil: * Drains through layers * Has natural organisms * Spreads moisture outward Container soil: * Holds all moisture inside the pot * Has nowhere to escape except drainage holes * Compacts over time That means structure matters more than richness. ๐Ÿ’ง ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐š๐ฅ ๐†๐จ๐š๐ฅ: ๐Œ๐จ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ ๐›๐ฎ๐ญ ๐€๐ข๐ซ๐ฒ Healthy container soil should: * Drain freely * Feel slightly springy * Not stay soggy for days * Dry gradually, not instantly Think sponge, not mud. ๐Ÿชด ๐’๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ฌ ๐’๐จ๐ข๐ฅ ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐š๐ฅ ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ž You might notice: * Water pooling on top * Soil shrinking from the sides of the pot * Musty smell * Yellowing leaves despite careful watering These arenโ€™t fertilizer problems. Theyโ€™re structure problems. ๐ŸŒผ ๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐“๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐’๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  As light increases, roots will want to expand. If the soil structure is poor: * Growth stalls * Overwatering becomes easier * Pests become more likely * Repotting becomes more stressful Fixing soil structure early sets up everything else for success. ๐Ÿ’š ๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ: ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐‘๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐–๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž Before we talk mixes, drainage holes, or amendments this weekโ€ฆ Remember this: Healthy container gardening isnโ€™t about feeding more. Itโ€™s about creating space for roots to breathe. Thatโ€™s where real growth begins ๐ŸŒฑ Be honest, have you ever blamed the plantโ€ฆ when it was probably the soil? ๐Ÿ˜„

Plant app
Does anyone use a plant app and if so which one? I used plant parent this year and was not really happy with it. I like the set up but the advice they give you was not always right.
