UK Container Plants for Driveway

Hi all, we had our driveway extended at the beginning of the year. On the right side we have a space where there is a small hedge, a "multi-coloured" rose bush (Red, White, Cream, Yellow and Orange) and some left over stumps from the original hedges that aligned the front of the house.

I'm looking to make some rectangular containers (waist height) to go along the left side, what plants do you feel I should plant in there? We used to have a wasp issue in the loft each year when the hedge was there so ideally want to avoid anything to attract the wasps back.
