Ray Popeye Corona
I work with at risk youth and I would like to share several stories about lives who went from a rough beginning whether it be gangs, abuse, among other things to change their lives and become a much better version of themselves. I'm doing this for 2 reasons.
  1. To help us remember that no matter how far down you are everyone can change their life if they want to.
  2. To remind us remember not to judge a book by its cover.
If you want me to continue sharing these life stories or not let me know. Also you may run into someone who could use a word of encouragement and remember one of these stories to share with them.
Here's your first story.
Ray "Popeye" Corona:
Ray "Popeye" Corona's life is a testament to overcoming adversity, personal transformation, and ultimate achievement in the world of boxing and MMA refereeing.
Early Life, Gang Activity, and Drug Use
Ray was raised in Southern California, specifically in communities like El Monte, Baldwin Park, and Bassett. His childhood was marked by instability, as he moved through foster care and temporary homes due to an abusive mother and overall turbulent family environment. In these neighborhoods, gang presence and violence were pervasive, especially during the 1960s to the 1980s.
At just 12 years old, Ray was "jumped into" the Bassett Grande gang—following in the footsteps of his brothers and peers. Life in the gang exposed him to street violence, crime, and a constant threat of danger. His early years were also marred by substance abuse; he began using drugs at a young age and struggled with methamphetamine and cocaine addiction for 26 years. This chaotic period resulted in frequent encounters with law enforcement, including time spent in juvenile detention, youth authority, and eventually "party prison." Ray is open about being an ex-felon and having served time in state prison, with multiple incarcerations connected to his criminal and drug-fueled lifestyle. However, there are no public records specifying exactly how many years he spent in prison—only that these periods were significant in shaping his journey.
Turning Point: Faith, Recovery, and New Purpose
Ray’s transformation began when he found faith and became a Christian 14 years ago. His relationship with God was pivotal—not only in breaking his drug addiction but also in helping him forgive his mother and move forward from his past. Sobriety became a foundation for rebuilding his life. Ray’s recovery story stands as a powerful example of redemption, displaying how spirituality and determination can help break cycles of violence and addiction.
Boxing and MMA Refereeing Career
After renouncing gangs and drugs, Ray found his calling in the sport that had always fascinated him: boxing. Unable to compete as a fighter, he channeled his energy and discipline into refereeing. He earned his professional license in 1998 and quickly became recognized for his competence, fairness, and respect for athletes.
Over the years, Ray has officiated more than 890 boxing matches and 42 MMA fights, working under the California State Athletic Commission and the World Boxing Council (WBC). He believes the best referees are those who go unnoticed—ensuring fairness without becoming the focus of the contest. His professional reputation for integrity and composure in the ring resulted in his induction into the California Boxing Hall of Fame, cementing his status among the sport’s elite officials.
Coaching, Advocacy, and Community Work
Beyond the ring, Ray is the host of the "Third Man in the Ring" podcast, where he brings to light the untold stories of referees and the wider combat sports community. He also engages in community programs, focusing on youth development, support for the homeless, and social justice advocacy. His personal struggles have inspired him to mentor and guide others—particularly at-risk youth—offering hope and resources for those looking to escape similar backgrounds.
Legacy
Ray "Popeye" Corona’s journey, from a troubled gang member battling addiction and incarceration to a Hall of Fame referee and respected community leader, is a model of resilience, transformation, and purpose through faith and hard work. He openly shares the lessons learned from every step of his path, proving that lasting change is possible even after the harshest beginnings.
