Reading from a script

Ok. Here's a technology question. Do you memorize chunks of information from a script and then speak to the camera and do lots of takes with editing, or do you just ad lib your way through an entire presentation? I have been having trouble trying to read a script and make it appear natural on the camera. Is there a cheap technology other than a teleprompter that allows you to stare right into the camera on your monitor and read?
