Collaborations gone wrong… how to do it better.
I need to share something that’s been weighing on me because I know so many of us have been there. Recently, I had two pretty disheartening experiences while collaborating with creators. I edited videos for them (for free) in exchange for testimonials—something that’s crucial for building credibility and growing my business.
I delivered the edits within 3-5 days, allowed revisions, and treated their projects with the same level of professionalism and care I would for paying clients. I made sure they had a polished, product with what they provided.
Both of them posted the videos… but here’s the kicker: I never received a testimonial from either one. Not even a simple acknowledgment. It’s honestly discouraging. When you put your best foot forward and deliver on time, you hope the effort will be reciprocated.
But here’s what I’ve learned: Value deserves value. Just like you wouldn’t walk out of a grocery store without paying for your items, I can’t keep offering my services without receiving what was agreed upon—whether it’s money or a testimonial.
Moving forward, I’ll make sure people can see the final product but won’t have access to download it until the agreed exchange is fulfilled. Because our work deserves respect and acknowledgment. And we have to protect that value.
I’m sharing this not out of bitterness, but to let anyone out there feeling the same way know you’re not alone. Stand firm in your value. Don’t let anyone make you feel small for setting boundaries.
Have you ever experienced something like this?
