Maybe you were never broken
I think one of the most healing things a person can realize is that maybe they were never actually "broken". Maybe, their nervous system has just been carrying more than anyone realized.
I’ve been talking a lot lately in my nervous system community about capacity, overwhelm, and the invisible load people carry and the responses to this conversation have been incredible because so many people are realizing they’ve spent years blaming themselves for things that may have actually been protective adaptations all along.
You can almost feel the shift happen in the discussions. That moment where someone stops and realizes:
“Oh… maybe I’m not lazy.”
“Maybe I’m not weak.”
“Maybe I’m not failing at life.”
"Maybe I'm not doing it wrong after all!"
Usually, when we feel like this, it's a sign that our system has just been carrying more than we realized.
And I love it so much when we have these discussions and it happens because I think that understanding these things can change so much.
A lot of us grew up believing that if we were struggling to:
• keep up
• stay patient
• stay motivated
• handle stress “normally”
• or do simple things consistently
then something must be wrong with us.
But nervous system work starts to introduce another possibility: What if many of the things we criticize ourselves for, or think of as flaws in our personality or morality even, were actually protective adaptations?
Not random flaws and not evidence that we’re broken but patterns our nervous systems developed while trying to help us survive, cope, function, stay safe, stay accepted, or keep going.
That doesn’t mean those patterns always help us now - some of them can absolutely become exhausting, limiting, or painful over time.
But understanding why they developed often creates a completely different kind of relationship with yourself.
Usually a gentler one.
And I think that’s part of why learning about capacity can feel so emotional for people sometimes.
Because it reframes the conversation from:
“What’s wrong with me?”
to:
“What has my system been carrying all this time?”
And that, my friends, is a very different question that hits very differently. 💜
Has learning about nervous system capacity shifted the way you see yourself at all? Even in small ways?
If conversations like this resonate with you, I talk about nervous system regulation, capacity, overwhelm, co-regulation, and real-life healing work inside my free community:
