We were living in suburbia, looking at the state of the environment and wondering what difference one family could possibly make.
After having our first baby, I became much more conscious of the products and chemicals we were bringing into our home—but working out where to begin felt overwhelming.
Rather than doing nothing, I decided one small change was better than no change at all. I replaced my supermarket shampoo with a naturally made, eco-packaged shampoo bar.
From there, things began to snowball.
Whenever something ran out, I looked for an option that was a little better for our family and the planet. Not necessarily the “perfect” choice—just something we could find, afford and manage at the time.
What I couldn’t have imagined was the direction those small, meaningful choices would eventually take us.
Today, we live in a rammed-earth eco-home at Khemeia Valley, where we’re regenerating 850 acres of former farmland back into forest. We homeschool our two children, welcome guests into nature, and create experiences that feel more aligned than anything else we’ve done in our adult lives.
A shampoo bar didn’t cause all of that. But it was the first step in learning to pay attention, make a conscious choice—and then make another.
