SOTD: Aaron Terence Hughes - Guapo
Today I decided to give Guapo by ATH a second try. I know the first time around I was really put off by the ambergris and ambroxan combo, which gave it a strong, sort of salty muskiness. So let's see if it fares any better this time. Guapo is a men's fragrance that was launched in 2022.
The opening features a really beautiful citrus burst of lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, and Mandarin orange.
This creates a sort of fizzy effervescence that is quite refreshing.
It doesn't take long for the middle notes to show themselves as some woody notes appear along with a powdery amber and a robust ambroxan taking over. A hint of fruitiness from the granny smith apple and a subtle sweetness from the tonka bean come through, as well.
At the base is a sharp white musk and a
clean earthiness from the Haitian vetiver. A soft, creamy sandalwood further adds to the woodiness of the fragrance while a warm, salty ambergris provides the strong base upon which all of these notes are anchored.
Longevity is excellent at 8+ hours. Projection is good, pushing the scent out to around a 3 foot radius or so for the first couple hours, falling to around a foot for another couple hours before becoming mostly a skin scent. Sillage is mild, but you will definitely catch some whiffs as you move around. This would be good for casual wear, or just for going out, and could even be worn at the office. I would just recommend going easy on the sprays if you're wearing it to the office. This is a fragrance that would be best through the spring, summer, and fall months.
The opening of Guapo is a really beautiful citrus symphony that I really enjoy, however, it's quite brief, only lasting a few minutes before some of the heavier middle and base notes start to come through. I'm not as turned off as I was upon the first wear, but I'm still not a big fan of it for the same reason. The musky saltiness of the ambergris is just too much and I've learned that this is a note that I seem to be especially sensitive to.
So don't use my review as a reason to not try this fragrance, though, as I believe a lot of people may like this. It's just not for me, in particular.
Enjoy the rest of your day, gents!
