(Series Intro) – Welcome to the “Raw Materials” Series!
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! Somewhere down the rabbit hole of this fragrance hobby, I hit that point where just smelling finished fragrances wasn’t enough anymore. I wanted to get my hands on the raw materials themselves; ya’ know, the building blocks, the bones, the stuff that gives a fragrance its shape, texture and soul. My thinking was simple: if I could smell individual notes on their own, maybe I could get better at recognizing them when they show up in full compositions.
That curiosity is what sparked this new series. I wanted to know what individual notes actually smell like on their own, stripped away from all the polish and blending trickery of a finished fragrance. Because let’s be honest, it’s one thing to read “bergamot,” “vetiver,” “orris” or “labdanum” in a note breakdown… but it’s another thing entirely to smell those materials by themselves and really start building that mental scent library. That’s where the learning gets real.
So in this series, I’m diving into raw materials Joe A. style: one sniff, one impression and one nose-tickling revelation at a time. I’ve got a lineup of 32 materials to work through and I’ll be taking them in manageable doses, because from what I understand, some of these little devils are strong enough to wake the dead. My goal here isn’t to pretend I’m some master perfumer overnight rather, it’s to learn, to explore and to get better at recognizing the pieces that make up the fragrances we all enjoy.
So that’s where we’re headed! This series is gonna be part education, part exploration and part “what in the world am I smelling here?” which sounds like a pretty good time to me. Whether you’ve smelled raw materials before or this is totally new territory, I hope you’ll come along for the ride!
What say you, guys? What notes or accords would you be most interested in smelling on their own? And which ones do you think might be better left in the lab? Love to hear from ya’!
