Immortelle, or Helichrysum italicum (also known as the everlasting flower) is celebrated for its unique, warm, and honeyed fragrance. It’s predominantly grown in countries such as France, Italy, Spain, and Greece, where the warm, sunny climate and well-drained soils are ideal for its growth. The island of Corsica, in particular, is renowned for its high-quality immortelle production. The essential oil is extracted from the vibrant yellow, dried flowers of the plant, which bloom throughout the summer. The harvesting process involves collecting the flower heads at their peak, and then distilling them to capture their rich, complex aroma. This oil is prized in perfumery for its deep, luxurious scent and enduring warmth.
In perfumery, immortelle is valued for its rich, complex aroma, which combines sweet, spicy, and slightly woody notes with hints of caramel and earthy undertones. This makes it a popular choice for creating deep, warm, and opulent scents, often used in oriental and chypre fragrances. Immortelle adds a unique, lasting depth to compositions and is appreciated for its ability to bring a sense of luxury and warmth to a fragrance. Beyond perfumery, immortelle is also used in skincare for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
When I smell Immortelle: a warm, honeyed richness that feels both comforting and luxurious. It has this intriguing blend of sweet and spicy notes, with a hint of caramel and a subtle, earthy undertone that makes it feel grounded yet sophisticated. There's a certain depth to it that lingers, creating a sense of opulence without being overwhelming. Smooth and gentlemanly, but not stuffy or rigid! Very well executed in Kilian's new Old Fashioned!
