Pronunciation... (re-up'd)
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya'! Fellas, I’ll be honest, after all this time in the fragrance hobby, reviewing, collecting, decanting, talking scents almost daily… I STILL butcher fragrance names. And I know I’m not alone here. Take Joop! for example.
Is it like “loop” with a “y” in front?
Is it “yope” with that smooth European confidence?
Or is it just me out here sounding like a backwoods sommelier saying “Joe-pp!” like I’m calling a dog in for dinner?
This hobby will humble you REAL quick. One minute you’re feeling sophisticated discussing niche perfumery… next minute you realize you’ve been mispronouncing a house name for years while confidently recommending it to people. Nothing hits quite like hearing a perfumer interview or walking into a boutique and suddenly realizing, "oh no… I’ve been saying that completely wrong."
And honestly? It’s part of the fun. Fragrance is global. French, Italian, Arabic, Spanish, German, these scents come from everywhere, and sometimes our Midwest, Southern, New York, or “Joe Average” accents just do their best to survive the journey. At the end of the day, loving the scent matters more than sounding like you trained in Paris. Ha, I still run into names today where I pause before saying them out loud hoping nobody asks me to repeat it!
What say you, guys? What fragrance name have YOU completely butchered before? Which one shocked you the most when you finally heard the correct pronunciation? And let's be honest… what name are you still secretly unsure about right now? Love to hear from ya’!
