Match #6
Match #6 in my 40-fragrance tournament was an easy decision. It paired #26 seed Givenchy Gentleman Society against #39 seed John Varvatos Star USA.
John Varvatos Star USA (2011, created by Rodrigo Flores-Roux) is a bright, citrus-forward fragrance with ginger, cardamom, vetiver, and woods. I was given this bottle almost a decade ago, so it'll always remind me of South Florida. I'm actually down to the last few drops. It's pleasant and easy to wear, but ultimately a fairly simple fragrance.
Givenchy Gentleman Society (2023, created by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, Maïa Lernout, and Fabrice Pellegrin) is my favorite in the Gentleman line. With notes of sage, narcissus, vetiver, vanilla, and cedarwood, it feels richer, smoother, and much more distinctive.
It's not really a summer fragrance, but that didn't matter in this matchup. Gentleman Society simply offers more depth and keeps me interested throughout the day. It advances comfortably to the next round, while Star USA drops into the loser's bracket.
