英文故事時間
Around 10 years old, I was sent to an English learning cram school, I remember distinctly saying “I’m Taiwanese why do I need to speak English!?” and being so frustrated. Turns out, I was lucky enough to have a very fun teacher. I was an average student. Mediocre at best. Timid like most kids that age. Until one day, I was “encouraged” to participate in a speech contest, and reluctantly went.
I was so uncomfortable. Public speaking is not in my blood. However, I could just memorize things. I memorized the whole speech, gestures and high energy intonations. We would go to other classrooms to perform as a rehearsal.
It is easy to point out the problems in my experience and in the overall ESL industry in TW. But in retrospect, little did I know, I was building a really strong foundation in pronunciation, fluency, and inflection. I just didn’t realize that. I didn’t know that reading aloud was so powerful.
As an ESL tutor now, I never underestimate the value of reading and especially reading aloud.
