Food Friday ~ Magnesium
Magnesium—One of the Most Important Nutrients for Restoration
When we think about healing, we often focus on removing things that are causing problems. But restoration also requires providing the body with what it needs to function well. One nutrient that is commonly overlooked is magnesium.
Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions throughout the body. It helps regulate how your cells produce energy, communicate with one another, and respond to stress. When magnesium is low, many different systems can begin struggling at the same time.
Magnesium helps support:
🧠 Nervous System Regulation
It helps calm the nervous system by supporting healthy communication between nerve cells. Magnesium works alongside GABA, one of your brain's primary calming neurotransmitters, making it easier for your body to shift toward a more relaxed state.
💪 Muscle Relaxation
Muscles need calcium to contract and magnesium to relax. When magnesium is low, muscles may remain tighter than they should, contributing to tension, stiffness, headaches, eye twitches, or nighttime leg cramps.
😴 Sleep Quality
Because magnesium supports nervous system regulation and muscle relaxation, it also helps prepare the body for restful sleep. While it isn't a sleeping pill, having adequate magnesium can make it easier for the body to naturally settle into deeper, more restorative sleep.
🩸 Healthy Blood Sugar Balance
Magnesium plays an important role in insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. Healthy magnesium levels help your body use insulin more efficiently, supporting steadier energy and reducing some of the highs and lows associated with blood sugar fluctuations.
-> Why Stress Matters
One of the biggest reasons people become magnesium deficient is chronic stress. Every stressful event—whether it's emotional stress, illness, inflammation, poor sleep, overtraining, or simply feeling overwhelmed—increases your body's demand for magnesium.
Think of magnesium like one of the body's "calming reserves." During stressful seasons, those reserves can be depleted more quickly than they're replaced through food. Many people don't realize that the symptoms they attribute to "just stress" may also be influenced by low magnesium.

🌱 Restoration Challenge
For the next seven days:
✔️ Add at least one magnesium-rich food to one meal each day.
✔️ As you eat, simply notice how your body feels over the week. Pay attention to your muscle tension, sleep quality, energy, mood, and ability to handle stress. You don't need to force a result—just become curious about what your body is telling you.
Remember, your body whispers before it screams. Sometimes those whispers are simply asking for nourishment.
💬 I'd love to hear from you—what magnesium-rich food are you adding this week? Do you already have a favorite recipe that includes one of these foods?
