Creative + Business Balance
Something I’ve been thinking about: balancing creativity and business. Some days I’m deep in songwriting mode, other days I’m learning how to position myself better as an artist. How do you all split your time between making music and building the business side of your career? Curious what routines work for you.
Free MIDI Transcriptions for Film & Game Soundtracks
With Christmas around the corner, I wanted to give back by sharing with you the MIDI transcriptions that I've made over the past few years on my Composing Live! streams. I've been quietly building a collection of transcriptions that I've done for personal study from scores like Harry Potter, How To Train Your Dragon, Shrek, Elf, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain and more. Each of these come with a reference video and a free midi download file, no strings attached. With these MIDI files, you can plug them into your DAW and reassign expression maps to them to fit your orchestral sample libraries, or test out new sample libraries that you've bought over the Black Friday weekend. Some of the sample libraries I've used for these include CSS, CSW, Spitfire Symphony Orchestra, EW Hollywood Opus, Pacific Ensemble Strings, Tina Guo Solo Cello, CS Cineperc, CS Dulcimer, CS Randy's Celeste, Omnisphere, Zebra, Diva, and more. Here's a sample of Hedwig's Theme: https://www.sohncompositions.com/store/free/hedwigs-theme-hp For the whole collection (28 with more coming in the future): https://www.sohncompositions.com/store/free Happy Holidays & Happy Studying!
Composing underscore-ish Tracks (Advise and Exercises)
I like melodies. In fact, maybe i like them a little bit too much 😄. When i start a new piece i normally start with the melody and then find fitting chords to accompany it. Most of the times this works ok but when it comes to writing an underscore type like track, i really struggle, because my melodies tend to be to active. So basically the typical problem of overcomplicating things 😅. Can you guys recommend some sort of exercises to get better at this type of composing / Do you have some tipps , when it comes to writing such tracks ? Thanks in advance :)
Cinematic / ambient drum loos 💩😭
Ok... this have to be the most frustrating thing in the world for me 😱😫, you know when you're a musician of many years and think you know how to do "anything" in your production 🤣. and what you thinks should be something easy to do have being the most difficult thing to wrap up, if you guys hears this loops please let me know If there a course, a YouTube video or something that I can use as reference to create this types of drum loops for my music. Thanks in advance 🙏🏻
