Nobody Talks About This Part of Activities…
Everyone sees the fun part of activities — the parties, the games, the big events. But nobody really talks about the other side of it. The days when your calendar looks great on paper… but half your residents don’t show up.The times you plan something and it completely flops. The pressure of trying to keep residents engaged when their moods, health, and energy change every single day. Or when you’re already overwhelmed with documentation, care plans, and everything else… and you’re still expected to make every activity feel exciting and meaningful. This job is rewarding, but it’s not easy. Not even close. What’s something about activities that people on the outside don’t understand?

Not Every Activity Has to Be Big to Be Meaningful
I think sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make every activity something big, exciting, and over-the-top. But some of the best moments don’t come from that at all. They come from: ✔️ Sitting outside and just talking ✔️ Listening to music someone loves ✔️ Laughing during a simple game ✔️ Letting a resident tell their stories Those are the moments that actually stick. Those are the ones that build trust, comfort, and connection. Don’t get me wrong—parties and big events are great. But the small, everyday interactions? Those matter just as much—if not more. So if today doesn’t feel “impressive” on paper… that doesn’t mean it wasn’t meaningful. 💬 What’s a simple moment with a resident that stuck with y

Activities Tell the Story—Marketing Shares It
One thing I’ve learned working in long-term care—the activity department and marketing should go hand in hand. Activities aren’t just something we do to fill the day. They show quality of life, engagement, and what daily living actually looks like in the building. When marketing and activities work together, it allows families and potential residents to see real moments—socialization, events, and the overall atmosphere of the community. Photos from activities, special events, and even small day-to-day moments can make a big impact when shared the right way. It also helps tell the story of the residents—not just the care they receive, but how they live. At the end of the day, activities help create the experience—and marketing helps share it. Do your activities and marketing departments work together where you are?

Yogurt Parfait Activity
This was a big hit for us and super easy to set up. We did a yogurt parfait activity using: - 2 flavors of yogurt (We had strawberry and vanilla) - blueberries - strawberries - granola - crushed graham crackers - clear cups (so they could see the layers) I built the parfaits while the residents told me what they wanted in theirs, but you could also have residents build their own to promote independence. The clear cups made it more fun because they could see all the layers come together, and it turned into both a food activity and a sensory/visual experience. This is a great option for: - small groups - residents with different ability levels - encouraging choice and participation Plus… anything with food is usually a win 😊 The residents could not stop raving about this! They loved it so much! Would you have your residents build their own or do you prefer to assist like I did?”

Dementia and Voting: The Truth People Get Wrong
A lot of people don’t realize this… but having dementia does NOT automatically take away someone’s right to vote. A resident can still vote as long as they are able to express a choice and understand what voting means in a basic way. A diagnosis alone doesn’t remove that right. I think this is important to talk about because we work with these individuals every day, and they still deserve dignity, independence, and a voice. Just because someone has dementia doesn’t mean they stop being a citizen. Have you ever helped a resident vote before?
