An Oddity in Dating...a simple dispatch
Greetings gents, I thought I would share with the community an emergent oddity that I have noticed. In my last three dates, when I went to pay for the service, I was met with protest by my date. Upon drawing my plastic from leather, firm grip in hand, my ears detected a faintly and sometimes not so faint rebuttal of such a deliberate action. I was too quick on the draw some may say! "No! You don't have to do that!" "I got it!" "We can split it!" And, my favorite refrain, "STOP!" Dignity has never been put on notice so quickly, I dare say. How dare I be a gentleman and pay for her meal?! Oh to be on a charming date, enjoying the rhythm of levity and cooking recipes, for it all to come a sudden halt, as I go to pay the bill. Yes, pay the bill. In such curious moments, I recollect if I could get the mailman to stop delivering bills to my address? On one peculiar occasion that shall live on within the annals of recursive memory, I appeared before the customer service counter of a bowling alley. With my date at my right side, I asked for her shoe size. I told the young chap that we want to bowl and rent some shoes. He smiled and said that would be $44.00 (or whatever amount). I held my credit card in hand and reach out to give it to him. His eyes see my card. He, too, extends his hand in a valiant effort to meet me half way. But alas! Another hand appeared! This hand quickly ran in-between our ongoing transaction. The face of the customer rep was abject confusion. I only had a moment before my date had snatched my credit card from my hand. Then I felt what was like a bump on my waist. I looked down thinking it might be a kid trying to get my attention. As I looked down, this maneuver was executed so swiftly that I scarcely realized he no longer had my card, nor did I. My simple observations of the matter underscore a persistent pattern in dating. It is the protest - if not adamant refusal - to let the man be a gentleman and pay for the date. This leaves the gentleman to wonder as why this may be the case?

This issue is not as new as one might think, as the etiquette text we had in school (written around 1910) addressed it. I will attempt to quote as best i recall, though it may not be exact. "Upon occasion a gentleman may encounter a lady who, though bereft of support from father, brothers, or uncles, may still insist upon paying her own expenses. In such a situation the gentleman is better served to pocket both his capital and his dignity rather than insisting upon his natural right to provide for a lady's needs" Although the text was referring to a gentleman encountering a lady during his travels (e.g. on a train) the "independent woman insisting on not accepting a gentleman's generosity" is, unfortunately, not exclusively a modern problem. It does indicate, in agreement with the initial posting, a certain character of the lady which a gentleman would be wise to take notice of and consider.

@Jo Henderson - it was a private school run by Jesuits with a curriculum updated in 1573. The final chapter of our American Studies class refered to the Civil Rights Movement as "Trouble on the Horizon"... 🤪
The Rise of Robots
Apparently, China just created "Moya" - the most realistic robot/android so far. Features? - Cameras in the eyes - Most accurate expressions so far - Biometric human-temp warm skin - Walking gait 90% accurate to human Proposed uses? - Healthcare - Therapy - Customer service (general) - "Companion" While some consider it creepy in the uncanny valley between human and machine and fear the singularity, and others fear loss of jobs, some praise it as a step toward necessary replacement when it comes to the more challenging aspects of human interaction (especially since social media, let alone the sheer number of predicted geriatric population to need care in the coming 10-20 years). What are your thoughts?

The primary drivers for technological advancement historically have been war and sex ... even the publications of the Gutenberg Bible were funded by the after hours printing of "adult woodcut" images. Humanity often falls to its lowest levels of behavior...which is why gentlemanly conduct (disciplining the savage within not destroying it) is SO vital to humanity's development. Otherwise we just become animals with dangerous tools.
What is everyone's opinion on the US attacking Iran?
I'm curious what the opinion is of everyone about the U.S. taking out the Iran regime that has been in power for 47 years. Personally, I am happy about the liberation of Iran from that regime. My father-in-law was Iranian (he has passed) so my wife is half-Iranian and I have had family executed by that regime. I know some places are celebrating and some are against this war but I wanted to hear the views of the members of this Society.

My perspective as a combat veteran (Gulf 1 & 2) who remembers the days of the Shah before the Ayatollah took power...after several days of thought...is this: I think a military response has been overdue, based on their previous actions. I think the Shah was better than the Ayatollah. Im surprised by the resistance from the left to the removal of a leader who took away women's rights (dress, education, public travel, opinion) and treated them like property instead of people. A religious government that killed homosexuals and slaughtered protesters and their families is exactly what I thought the left would gladly oppose and want removed. I think that, as long as the US sticks to removing the threat and avoids installing a (puppet-)government things will be good. I think we should *not* put boots on the ground to enforce *our* will on a foreign nation, then we should be okay. Helping an oppressed people is very different than Empire building, and the distinction can get fuzzy, so we should stay clearly on the Helping side. A clearly defined mission with clearly defined objectives and clearly defined exit strategies is preferable to getting mired in an action that will lead to a long-term drain at a time when the US has bigger threats to handle once this one is diminished.

Apparently, not like a bicycle.
You know how they say some things are like a bicycle and you and you don't forget? Well, I guess that is not the case with a safety razor. I started using a safety razor and got used to using it with no nicks, and then I grew a beard for a couple of months. When I shaved it off I have noticed that it's almost like starting over again. These last two times I have shaved, I have nicked myself. Is this just me or has this happened to anyone else? Is this normal?

As a gentleman who uses a straight razor, and thus my memory of safety razors may be hazy. I should like to suggest two elements which might be relevant to your current experience. First, your skin may need to "relearn" the safety razor experience as notable time without such shaving will impact how sensitive the skin is when restarting. Secondly, an important element with safety razors is the blade's angle of attack. A more aggressive angle will produce a closer shave but may also irritate the skin, therefore adjusting this (or finding a razor with a milder angle) may reduce the irritation.
