@Jeff Wood Thank you so much for the videos - haven’t learned how to transfer from front to back yet - I tried once but I panicked - will need to overcome that - I see now that would make it more comfortable for me rotating if I felt comfortable doing that - appreciate your thoughts and guidance - will give it another go

@Jeff Wood - apologies for not sending video I wasn’t able to as I go to the pool on my own - however since my last post I cancelled my swimming lessons as I felt nothing was being explained properly and I hit a brick wall with trying to turn my head to breathe - I went on my cruise but the water was a lot deeper than anticipated ie my feet didn’t touch the ground so panic set in - I ended up holding onto my husband’s shoulders and kicking my legs to get from one end of the pool to the other as I haven’t learned to tread water yet - only ever had lessons in shallow water - since returning I joined my local gym and started swimming lessons again the teacher is amazing - we started from scratch and she explains everything as we go along and is covering the basics which I am finding really helpful, she gives praise often and says I just need to believe in myself - she knows exactly why I am feeling a certain way and is able to understand and explain what is going on. I’ve had 4 lessons so far and managed to do backstroke on my fourth lesson. I feel I need to go and practice but the water is up to my neck - it’s the same depth from one end to the other - I’m only 4’11 - I’m OK when she is with me but am getting a bit anxious because the water is higher than I’m used to even though my feet touch the ground and I can stand up when on my front and back when she is there - how do I overcome this as I really need to go practice? I do get in the pool 15mins before my lesson starts just to get used to the water as I feel this relaxes me before my lesson begins but am yet to do it when teacher is not around! Is this normal? It’s the depth that is causing anxiety.
If there is hope for me, there is hope for anyone.
I am 53. I have always wanted to learn to swim. I left my swimming lessons two weeks ago, scared of floating or doing anything in the water, except for standing, wading and walking. After going through the Caribe beginning swimmer videos (and some others), I returned to my lessons this week and on Tuesday, glided with a kickboard, with no instructor assistance. And on Thursday glided unassisted AND without a kickboard. I have always feared not being in control (or what I now know is buoyancy), and looking down into the water. But praise God, I did it on Thursday. Thank you Coach Jeff and Coach Meredith! God and your videos helped me tremendously. I will continue watching and implementing your strategies.

@Susi Victor I do that! But why - I’ll be floating and all of a sudden I’ll panic and then I have to stand up
Just started swimming at age 66
Hi just found this amazing website. Never learned when I was younger. Having hourly lessons each week and practicing on my own. Having trouble with breathing. When out of breath I tend to stand up in the pool. When I turn my head I feel unbalanced and of control - what am I doing wrong?

Hi @Georgina Morrison I’m getting there but still get a bit anxious - trying to do front crawl my right arm which is my dominant is not as forthcoming as my left - trying to relax when I turn my head to breath but I feel unbalanced. There is just so much to think about - not sure if it’s the way I’m being taught as the caribe way is explained so much simpler. They tried to get us to roll over on our backs but I failed. Feel as though I am being taught too many things at once but when I questioned it was told it is all part and parcel of learning. I’ve also learned not to compare myself to others as you have to go at your own pace. I started last April was hoping to at least be able to swim before I go on my retirement cruise but it wasn’t as easy as I thought - I’ve been told I over think things which is what adult learner swimmers do I’ve been told - I’m a lot better than when I started and I will keep going - this is my 4th attempt over the years btw

@Georgina Morrison Hi Georgina - think you’re right - I’ll try slowing down so that I can feel the water and feel comfortable in what I’m trying to do

@Jeff Wood just want to be able to swim - tried a few times over the years and stopped when I got stuck or thought i couldn’t do it. I had a lesson today and am having trouble turning my head to breathe - am I supposed to be finishing the stroke ie front crawl and then turn my head it all seems a bit rushed and I’m not sure whether my head is too low in the water as it’s an effort to turn and get a breath - what am I doing wrong please
I have a question…
Those of you who are taking or have taken lessons at your local program and have gone through our curriculum, what is different about the Caribe Swim course? example: I’ve heard many people tell me they were asked to bob up and down (submerse themselves vertically) while blowing bubbles as one of their first lessons. Or I’ve heard many share the instructor was teaching them freestyle kick with a kick board as an initial skill. Can you share what lessons all came before learning to float or learning how to move your arms? Especially the ones you didn’t feel ready to do at the time? Thank you so much! I will be writing a segment about why we approach the learn to swim process differently. I’d love to imbed the wisdoms of your experiences!

Your program explains everything so clearly - I’m not sure some teachers know how to teach adults and I’ve had a few trust me - I find teachers don’t realise how challenging it is teaching adults and expect you to just pick up whatever they are trying to teach you straightaway. They tend to flip from one thing to the other and it’s mind boggling at times. Your course clearly explains everything and I will be using the practice techniques especially the floating to gain more confidence in the pool when I go on my own - so “thank you” - so glad I found your course!
