What to look for when starting as an apprentice?
Hoping all is well , I need to do a PSA for all barbers looking into an apprenticeship on the big island. Do your research, look into your mentors history , look at their success rate. Im watching too many people get burned when it comes to getting their hours logged and reported . Advocate for yourself , ask questions if they get defensive, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY Everything should be transparent when it comes to any apprenticeship GO to the DCCA website for any and ALL information Stay safe Stay healthy Stay gracious Barberina's 🤙🏾

Thank you so much for sharing, Sarah! I'm currently searching for an apprentice under another barber, and I find this very useful information and pointers to help me stay within this process.
💰 How Are You Tracking Your Barbering Income? Let’s Talk Systems 📊
Aloha Barbers — let’s get into the business side of the chair. 🤙🏽✂️You’re grinding all week, stacking cuts, and filling your schedule… but here’s the real question: Do you know exactly how much you’re making? And more importantly, where it’s coming from, where it’s going, and how to grow it? Whether you're just starting out or deep into the game, tracking your income is key to scaling up, saving smart, and staying in control of your career. Some barbers use apps. Some use spreadsheets. Others go old-school with a notebook. There’s no one “right” way — but doing nothing? That’s not the move. 💬 So let’s open up the conversation: - What system or method are you using to track your income right now? - Do you separate cash from digital payments? - Are you tracking daily, weekly, or monthly? Drop your approach (or questions!) in the comments. This is how we grow together — by learning what’s working and sharing tools that help each other level up. 📈🔥 #AlohaBarberCollective #BarberMoneyMoves #TrackYourBag

I like to consistently keep track of my income on a daily basis through a monthly spreadsheet. I really believe that it allows me to not only see the income portion, but also allows me to keep track of any cash preferred payments from clients as well as any expenses that keeps me conscious towards whatever it is that I may need/want to spend from my income. Moreover, I also like to keep track on specific expenses/spendings on another spreadsheet which further details any business expenses, living expenses, and any other spendings outside of them. I like this format because it also also allows me to keep track on the number of clients each day and allows me to also assess any new clients on the specific days.
Let’s Talk Clippers: Tools for Precision and Efficiency✂️💈
Let’s talk about the bread and butter of every barber’s toolkit—clippers! The right clippers can make or break your efficiency and the quality of your cuts. Here are my go-to clipper tools and why I rely on them: 1. Wahl Magic Clip (Cordless) The Wahl Magic Clip is a staple in the barbering world for a reason. It’s lightweight, powerful, and perfect for blending, fading, and precision work. The stagger-tooth blade makes it easy to achieve smooth, seamless blends, and the cordless design provides freedom of movement. 2. BabylissPRO FX3 & FX870 (Cordless Clippers & Trimmers) These are my workhorses for sharp, clean lines and detailed edging. The BabylissPRO FX3 is excellent for bulk cutting and fading, while the FX870 trimmer delivers crisp outlines and sharp details. Plus, their motors are powerful and run super smooth. 3. Andis Master Cordless Clipper This clipper is a beast when it comes to heavy-duty cutting. It’s reliable for handling thick hair, precision fading, and bulk removal. The adjustable lever gives me the flexibility to customize my cuts with ease. 4. Wahl Detailer (Cordless Trimmer) The Wahl Detailer is my go-to for clean, sharp edge-ups and designs. The T-wide blade allows for closer trimming, making it perfect for crisp hairlines and beard detailing. 5. Andis Slimline Pro Li This trimmer is lightweight and versatile—great for finishing work and beard detailing. Its compact size makes it easy to maneuver around the ears and necklines. Why I Use These Clippers: ✅ Precision & Control: They deliver clean, consistent cuts every time. ✅ Versatility: Perfect for fades, tapers, designs, and beard work. ✅ Comfort & Ergonomics: Lightweight and easy to maneuver. ✅ Professional Quality: Built to withstand daily use and stay sharp longer. When investing in clippers, prioritize quality, comfort, and durability—these are tools you’ll use every day, so make sure they meet your needs! What clippers are you rocking with right now, and why do you love them? Let’s chat in the comments!

I've currently been using the JRL Onyx and the TPOB X trimmer. I love the way they are quiet and perform very well. When it comes to JRL's I love the way how they open more than the usual clipper which helps with blending much easier and less time consuming. As for the TPOB X trimmers, at first impressions I was highly surprised with the way they performed with the price of it being more on the affordable side of the spectrum of other brands. I do however still have my second set when I first started cutting hair which are the wahl seniors and wahl detailers. These are my bread and butter's whenever I feel like the tools that I currently use aren't performing how I'd like in certain times. Maybe it's a psychological thing for me but whenever I do go back to them, they always perform under any circumstances.
Your "WHY" for barbering?
What inspired you to pursue this path, and what continues to drive you forward? Is it the satisfaction of seeing a fresh fade come out perfectly? The confidence boost you give a client when they leave your chair? The excitement of working with new tools, or the joy of building relationships with both regulars and new clients? What’s the BEST feeling about being a barber for you? Feel free to share anything beyond what I've mentioned. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
List your typical haircut steps in order.
1. consultation takes 2 mins what there looking for and style 2.15 min fade on sides 10 mins to finish 3.2 -3 mins to check and confirm client is happy with the cut.

1. Consultation (5-10 mins.): I strongly believe that this is what sets an excellent foundation in not only establishing a relationship with the client but to be able to create the most comforting environment for both of us to ultimately achieve the best haircut. This also allows me to get some video clips of the "Before" and allow the client to not be so "camera shy" sometimes if they are. 2. Fading (25-30 mins.): fading, shear work, lineup 3. Straight-Razor Finish & detail work (5-10 mins.) 4. Confirmation (5 mins.): Showcasing the end result of the haircut and getting "after" video shots of it as well as trying to capture that the client is satisfied with the result.
