If you are not making what you want - you are not that good.
To progress in your career, you need to become more valuable. If you are not getting paid what you want, you are not providing enough value for others to justify paying you more. Looking through the lens of productivity is one of the best ways to think about career progression. Productivity is the ratio of value over time. And the easiest way to be more productive is leveraging time other than your own. If I lost my business, team and all my money, I would get back where I am now ($60k m/o) in less than 6 months. And to be honest I wouldn’t start with my own business, but I would come back to being a sales manager. Why? - Leverage. I’d rather trade some earnings to have an additional 10 hrs and sign another management client part time. More leverage than spending all my days chasing prospects. Once you do it a few times you will not want to do anything else. If you already have some of those skills it takes to deliver to those clients but you lack to leadflow to get clients interested in that, this is what my company does.
