🎧 Quick Sound Check? My Mix Might Be Too Hot (Kids’ Short / Heavy VFX)
Hey everyone... I could use some trained ears. I just finished a short, VFX-heavy kids’ piece with a big soundscape (SFX, music, dialogue, etc), and I’m pretty sure I pushed the mix hotter than I should’ve. Before I start batch-mixing future episodes, I’d love a gut check from the pros here. What I’m trying to nail down: - Go-to LUFS target for YouTube? (honestly, I don't even know what LUFS is ???) - How you keep dialogue crisp without flattening the fun stuff? - Any tweaks for content mostly watched on phones/tablets? - Tips for managing dynamic range when the visuals are composited and loud by design? Workflow angle (aka: where I’m leveling up): I still cut inside CapCut for speed, but will be pulling more work into DaVinci Resolve: mainly for their free transform/perspective tools, which are a game-changer for shadow generation and tighter VFX blends. If anyone mixes inside this hybrid setup, I’m all ears. If you’re willing to give a quick listen, here’s the short:👉 https://youtu.be/ETUQx7xeqGs Even a “drop it 2–3 dB” helps. No deep critiques, please... I'm a novice and it will probably go over my head 🙈 Thanks in advance — and happy to return the favor on color, compositing, or edit pacing if anyone wants another set of eyes.

@Andrew Farmer Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to give this such a thoughtful watch and breakdown. I seriously appreciate it. 🙏 Your notes on the mix are super helpful. I’m glad the overall loudness feels balanced, and the dialogue callout makes total sense. I’ll pull back the music/SFX just a touch in those busy spots and try the EQ cleanup in that 300–600 Hz area. The 2–4 kHz boost for clarity is a great tip too. Also really appreciate the LUFS guidance… I’ve been overthinking it, so hearing that YT normalizes and that you aim for around -6 dB on the loudest parts is reassuring. 😅 And thank you for the encouragement. This project is definitely a (intensive) labor of love. Hearing that it translates well on your end means a lot. Can’t wait to apply these tweaks on the next episode! And thank you again for the generous feedback!
Clarity Kickoff: Getting My Focus Back This Week 🎯
I’ll be honest, I’ve been struggling to find my rhythm lately. I’ll have a good week on YouTube or here in the community, then life hits and my momentum slips. So this week, I’m keeping it simple: I’m focusing on one small win. For me, that’s posting a video by Friday, no overthinking, nothing fancy. What about you? What’s one small thing you want to actually finish this week? Drop it below, maybe we can keep each other accountable.

@Andrew Farmer Yes, I have every scene composited, all of the green screen footage, but have just been sitting on it 🙈. I even made a trailer, but no film 🙈🙈 https://youtu.be/DLqzgj6mwJQ?si=g71fdNdhb0exUGgo

Friday Check-In 💪
Alright everyone, it’s Friday. How’d the week go? Did you finish an edit you’re proud of, try something new in Resolve (or your editor), or just finally sit down and actually start a project you’ve been putting off? Drop it below, big or small, it counts. If you want a few eyes on something, post a short clip or screenshot and say what kind of feedback you’re after (color 🎨, pacing ⏱️, story flow, whatever). And take a sec to comment on someone else’s post too. Even a quick “that looks great” or a small tip helps keep the momentum going for everyone. So, what’s your win, lesson, or work-in-progress from this week?

After putting off one of my projects for 2 months, I aimed at completing 80%… I didn’t hit 80%, but I did 60%, and the best part, I’ve got momentum! I should complete it by next week 🙌

Hi hi! So glad to be here. I make original, mixed-media educational stories that kids and grown-ups can enjoy together. It’s a mix of live-action (green screen and VFX) and animation… kind of a blend of imagination and real-life lessons. The long-term goal is to turn it into a self-sustaining nonprofit for kids’ edutainment. For now, my sweet kids are just having fun helping me lay the groundwork before they move on to other things. https://youtu.be/SYd92nRKM0o?si=aXHhyZMV4ePTg8fK
