My n8n Hosting Architecture: A Deliberate Approach When considering how to host n8n for robust automation tasks, my priorities were control, security, scalability, and maintainability without excessive cost. This led me to the following self-managed architecture: 1. Infrastructure Foundation: KVM VPS with AlmaLinux 9 - Choice: I opted for a Virtual Private Server (VPS) utilizing KVM virtualization, configured with approximately 2 vCPUs, 8GB of RAM, and around 100GB of NVMe/SSD storage. The operating system is AlmaLinux 9. - Rationale: KVM VPS: Provides true hardware virtualization, ensuring dedicated resource allocation (CPU, RAM) and better performance isolation compared to container-based VPS or shared hosting. This is crucial for predictable n8n workflow execution. Resource Specs: These specifications offer a solid balance for running multiple Docker containers (n8n, Caddy, and potentially others) and handling moderate workflow loads without significant bottlenecks. AlmaLinux 9: Chosen for its stability and security as a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) derivative. It offers long-term support, a minimal footprint (reducing attack surface and resource consumption), and robust package management. 2. Application Deployment: Docker & Docker Compose - Choice: Both n8n and the Caddy web server are deployed as Docker containers. The entire application stack is defined and managed using a docker-compose.yml file. - Rationale: Docker for Containerization: Isolation: Each service (n8n, Caddy) runs in its own isolated environment with its specific dependencies. This prevents version conflicts and simplifies troubleshooting. Reproducibility & Portability: Docker images ensure that the application environment is consistent across different deployments (development, staging, production) or if I need to migrate to a new server. Simplified Updates: Upgrading n8n or Caddy typically involves pulling a new Docker image and redeploying the container, a much cleaner process than managing native installations. Docker Compose for Orchestration: Declarative Configuration: A single docker-compose.yml file defines all services, their configurations (ports, volumes, networks, environment variables), and dependencies. This acts as "infrastructure-as-code" for my n8n stack. Simplified Management: Commands like docker-compose up -d and docker-compose down make it easy to start, stop, and manage the entire application stack. Inter-Service Networking: Docker Compose automatically sets up a private network for the defined services, allowing them to communicate securely using service names (e.g., Caddy can reach n8n on port 5678).
