Activation routines
I’m in the middle of a sprint block while doing a reverse periodization in prep for a big season but most events happen in fall. I’ve never done activation exercises prior to my hard rides, but thought I’d give it a shot (it works). Below is the link to the Roadman Podcast discussing activation exercises by @Anthony Walsh and @Sarah Egan this is probably posted some where, but I thought I’d post the exercises: 1. Glute Bridges 2. Monster walks aka lateral band walks 3. Low lunge with a twist AKA “worlds greatest stretch” 4. Subpene Heal Tap DeadBug variation 5. Leg Swings In the video you will get a demonstration of how to do the exercise. https://youtu.be/JBXTSfJtqUI?si=YU5VOzqYMR79UGdG Are there other exercises you like to do?

Thanks for posting this @Brian Johnson most of us are in a constant rush to get out the door but if we look at training as a game where we’re trying to maximise adaptations it makes sense to plan time for pre ride routines like this
The reason you’re climbing slow
Good to be back doing podcasts with @Sarah Egan https://youtu.be/Zsb8Ro3zWCU?si=z4pXAPQvZsMgMlqS

Clothing thoughts for long races
You all know I love watching races during my workouts, and just watched a very miserable rainy stage 3 of 2025 Tirreno-Adriatico, which prompted me to think “oh man, what if it rains all 100 miles of unbound”. Any adverse weather gear hacks for end of may kansas big ride. I already know what to do if my hair stands up straight 🙂⚡️(not funny actually), so thinking of what to have gear-wise on race day. What do you wear/pack?

Castelli make a lovely tight fitting rain jacket called gabba which has saved me on many wet days. Spatz do some great shoes covers but they’re quite heavy. More suitable for training or if it’s very heavy
Daily Accountability :-)
Did you train today? My usual Friday rest day today in preparation from some long miles over the weekend.

Recovery from a spill
Brian Johnson, mountain bike/gravel racer
Hey everyone, glad to be here. I’ve been racing for about 15 years, mostly mountain bike and gravel, and I’m based in Omaha, Nebraska. I’ve lined up at a lot of the bigger events over the years, including Gravel Worlds, Leadville, BT Epic, Life Time Oz 50, Lutsen 99er, Breck Epic, and plenty more. As a working dad, I’m still pretty locked in on training, nutrition, and bike setup. I also coach a group of high school riders who are turning into some very fast mountain bike racers, and I’ve really enjoyed watching their progression. Looking forward to being part of the community, learning from everyone here, and hopefully contributing where I can. We’re all figuring this out together.
