Fear of lack VS over buying

Im really interested to know from anyone working on their relationship with money: I'm used to being super careful when shopping not to waste money , so how do you find a balance between letting go of the fear of lack and buying unnecessarily. A lot of stuff is just personal preference, something is just better quality or on the other hand being minimalist and not wasteful could be more important. I'd love to know if anyone else has gone through this process?
