I review a lot of software engineering resumes every week, and I keep seeing the same issues even from strong engineers.
Here are 3 reasons great engineers don’t get interviews 👇
1️⃣ ATS rejection (before a recruiter sees it)
Most resumes aren’t written in a way Applicant Tracking Systems understand. Wrong structure, missing keywords, or over-designed layouts = auto rejection.
2️⃣ Projects are described like tasks, not impact
“Built X using Y” isn’t enough. Recruiters want to see what problem you solved, how you solved it, and the result (performance, scale, cost, users).
3️⃣ One resume for every job
Top engineers tailor their resumes. Same resume for backend, frontend, and data roles usually kills callbacks.
When a software resume is done right, it should:
✔ Pass ATS
✔ Speak the recruiter’s language
✔ Clearly show technical depth + business impact
If you’re a software engineer / data engineer / tech professional and you’re not getting interviews, your skills may not be the problem your resume might be.
If you want, you can DM me “RESUME” and I’ll share what I’d fix on your resume (no pressure, no spam).
