Formal Fridays: Grimm’s Fairytales
This week’s prompt walks straight into the woods (and some controversy).
Grimm’s fairytales were never just bedtime stories.
They were tools.
Warnings.
Rules dressed up as fables.
Designed to keep girls quiet, careful, and easy to manage.
But what if we took those same stories and turned them inside out?
Story Threads is a new fashion collection I’m designing —
I want to have power of narrative, and still keep the dreaming in play.
These images are part of my extremely early creative process.
Gowns with grit.
Capes with questions.
Looks that ask:
•. What if the girl never waited for the woodsman?
•. What if the tower was higher learning, not a keep?
And yes — I still want it to be beautiful.
Because beauty doesn’t make us shallow.
Imagination doesn’t make us foolish.
They make us EXPANSIVE.
They remind us we’re allowed to have a rich inner world,
one that makes space for vision,
creativity,
problem-solving,
and power.
The gown doesn’t save you.
But it might remind you who you were before the world told you to shrink.
