Stages of Life
All my life I have volunteered for various things (mainly church related). When I was a teenager, it was Children’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Several Missionary trips both in and out of the US. Then as an adult, it was helping with Communion, usher, sound technician, retreat coordinator and counselor, and one of the heads of the Safety and Security Team at church, helped the local police department as part of the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni, and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (Ham Radio). Every so often I would have to step back and evaluate what I was doing and what was most important because it seems that volunteering is addictive.
Several months ago, I was at that crossroad again and I believe that God is telling me to step away from all my volunteering. That really puzzled me because it’s a great thing to give your time to help. I’ve struggled with this and last Sunday I came to the conclusion that God wants me to take a break from volunteering so I can focus on my health, my family, and my friends that I have sometimes put on the back burner.
