This week at work, we have a “Spirit Week” going on, and today is “Decade’s Day” where I’ve decided to build off a “Timeless Men’s Style Over the Decades” theme. I kept it grounded in autumnal browns to match the season. Starting with my coffee brown herringbone wool trousers, a pattern that dates back to Ancient Rome, and originally named after the skeletal pattern of a fish, herringbone has been a subtle mark of refinement in men’s clothing for some time now.
To complement that, I went with a lighter brown houndstooth sports coat. Houndstooth, first used by Scottish shepherds in the 1800s, has evolved from rugged practicality to a symbol of upper-class elegance. It’s a pattern that’s stood the test of time, carrying a sense of tradition while staying relevant.
I chose a silk brown tie to keep things muted yet elegant, in line with classic men’s style. I added a white cotton handkerchief as a pocket square, a practical item-turned-fashion accessory. I was reminded of its origins last night while watching From Russia with Love, seeing Bond casually pulling out his pocket square reminded me that these were once functional essentials long before they became stylish.
My shirt is a classic Brooks Brothers french cuff dress shirt, made from prima cotton. Brooks Brothers has been defining American menswear since 1818, and their shirts have been worn by men of influence for generations. This particular piece ties the whole look together, adding that extra bit of polish and tradition.
To round it all out, I’m wearing Terre D’Hermes Parfum, a fragrance that was an instant classic when it launched. It’s a scent that embodies sophistication and will still be worn by gentlemen long after we’re gone. A perfect reflection of timeless style.
So Gents, how did I do?
