No strong group survives on self-interest alone. Whether it is a family, a team, a community, or a brotherhood, unity requires each person to give up the need to always be right, always be heard, or always have their own way. The Stoics understood that we are not meant to live only for ourselves. We are part of something larger, and our choices either strengthen or weaken the whole. When pride leads, division follows. When humility leads, trust is built. Sacrifice is not about losing yourself. It is about having the discipline to place the good of the whole above the comfort of the moment. It means choosing patience over ego, service over recognition, and unity over personal ambition. Anything worth preserving will ask something of us. If we want the group to endure, we must be willing to lay down what threatens it. Reflection: Where is my ego asking to be served, when the situation is asking me to serve something greater?
