My Story Continues Another One (3)
Another Pagwa Story
Later in the season I had to make another trip into Pagwa River.
I had no problem going in over the snow road.
I did my work and later in the evening I decided to return back over the snow road.
During the day the sun was powerful and softened the snow.
After driving out a couple of miles I started to sink down in the snow and I couldn’t make any headway..
The road was too narrow to turn around so I thought I would have to spend the night on that road which wasn’t a pleasant thought.
It was still cold in the night but I wasn’t there long when one of the armed forces vehicles came along it was four wheel drive power wagon with a winch on the front of the vehicle.
They hooked the winch on my vehicle and turned me around.
When they got me turned around they towed me back on the base.
When I got back the Commander called me and told me not to try it again.
I thought that I would have to put the van on a train flatcar to get it back to Hearst my headquarters.
That night everything froze up hard so me being young and defiant I got up very early and left again. I didn’t have any trouble until I got almost out to Highway 11.
I had to cross the Pagwa River which was frozen when I went in the day before when I went in was broken up because of the warm weather the day before.
The water was running high due to the mild weather the day before but as luck would have it there was a big armed forces truck there pulling traffic across the river.
There were four or five vehicles there so he hooked on to them one by one and towed them across.
After that he hooked onto me and towed me across.
The water must have been two or three feet deep.
I don’t know if I would have made it or not without their help but I guess luck was with me.
I luck wasn’t on my side that day I would have had to return to the base.
Needless to say I didn’t try that trip anymore that spring..
